A road rage incident in the bustling Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. turned fatal for 28-year-old Rasheek Abdullah. On the afternoon of January 30, 2024, at the intersection of Q Street and Connecticut Avenue, Northwest, Abdullah was shot in the neck while inside his vehicle. The chain of events began when Rodney Baggott, 58, was driving his white Mitsubishi Outlander with his girlfriend.
After his girlfriend joined him in the vehicle, Baggott made a right-hand turn and became enraged, believing Abdullah, an Uber Eats driver, had cut him off.
Following the perceived slight, Baggott drove up next to Abdullah's vehicle, pulled out a firearm, and fired the single, fatal shot. With Abdullah critically wounded, Baggott fled the scene with his girlfriend still in the passenger seat. Abdullah was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and fought for his life for three months before succumbing to his injuries on April 29, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to Baggott. A key piece of evidence was the distinctive damage on Baggott's vehicle, which his girlfriend had attempted to have repaired at an auto body shop shortly after a police bulletin with the vehicle's description was released. On March 2, 2024, a Montgomery County Police officer conducted a traffic stop on the white Mitsubishi Outlander with Baggott and his girlfriend inside. Baggott was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm. The following day, a search warrant was executed at his girlfriend's apartment, where law enforcement discovered the handgun used in the shooting. DNA evidence on the firearm linked it to both Baggott and his girlfriend.
Initially arrested on a charge of Assault with Intent to Kill on April 15, 2024, Baggott's charges were set to be upgraded following Abdullah's death. A federal jury later found Rodney Baggott guilty of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. His sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2025.
