In the winter of 2020, a report of a traffic accident in Northwest Washington, D.C., led to the discovery of a grim scene. On the evening of December 3rd, police officers arrived at the 700 block of Morton Street, Northwest, to find 25-year-old Devonte Wilson inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, the young man succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation into the fatal shooting quickly progressed, and within a week, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department identified a suspect. On December 10, 2020, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 32-year-old Mohamed Goodwin of Northwest, D.C. Goodwin was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Wilson's death. At the time of his arrest, Goodwin was under the supervision of the Pretrial Services Agency and had a history of prior arrests, including assault on a police officer and various firearms offenses.
Following the arrest, the case against Mohamed Goodwin moved through the court system. In a significant development, Goodwin eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. However, in June 2023, during what was scheduled to be his sentencing hearing, Goodwin made an attempt to withdraw his guilty plea. He claimed that his intention was not to shoot Wilson but to defend himself against another individual in the vehicle. This move led to further legal deliberations in the case.
