In the evening hours of Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the sound of gunshots broke the calm in the 3400 block of Stanton Road SE in Washington, D.C. When the incident was over, three people had been struck by bullets. Emergency services were not initially called to the scene; instead, the three victims made their way to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Among them was 26-year-old Amaru Cureton, a male resident of Southeast, D.C.
While an adult male and a juvenile male who were also shot were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Cureton’s wounds proved to be far more severe. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on Thursday, March 28, 2024. His death turned the investigation over to the detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch, who are actively looking into the fatal shooting.
As of now, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and the Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Amaru Cureton's death. They are urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward and have provided a police contact number and an anonymous text tip line for the public to share information.
