In the early morning hours of March 3, 2022, the life of 44-year-old Artavarn Wagner of Alexandria, Virginia, was tragically cut short. At approximately 6:03 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 1700 block of Gales Street, Northeast, after receiving reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Wagner in an alley, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of DC Fire and EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the male victim's death led authorities to 23-year-old Delonte Jackson of Northeast, D.C. Surveillance footage from the area showed an interaction between Jackson and Wagner, which escalated to Wagner running away and Jackson chasing him. The footage then captured Jackson standing over Wagner in the alley before driving off in Wagner's car. Further evidence, including Jackson's DNA found on the steering wheel of the victim's vehicle and a court-ordered GPS monitor placing him at locations where the car was later spotted, solidified the case against him. Clothing matching the description of the suspect was also found at Jackson's residence.
On June 27, 2022, Delonte Jackson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. The legal proceedings that followed saw the initial charges elevated to first-degree murder while armed, armed carjacking, and multiple firearm offenses. Ultimately, in a plea deal, Jackson pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed. The prosecution agreed to dismiss the other charges and recommended a sentence of 13 and a half years, to be served concurrently with a federal prison term Jackson was already serving for a separate firearms charge. During the court proceedings, Wagner's mother delivered a powerful impact statement, expressing her profound grief and opposition to the plea deal, pleading with the judge to impose a sentence that would prevent Jackson from harming another family.
