In the early hours of April 25, 2024, the life of 38-year-old Ricky Canty of Temple Hills, Maryland, was tragically cut short. At approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 4500 block of Sheriff Road, Northeast in Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, they discovered Canty suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into the male victim's death led authorities to a complex case involving multiple suspects. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts detailed four masked individuals, some of whom were armed, exiting a vehicle and approaching a deli. An exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in Canty's death. The suspect vehicle, which was later found after being involved in a car accident while fleeing the scene, contained crucial evidence, including cell phones.
Months after the incident, on August 14, the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 18-year-old Jaylen Suggs of Northeast, D.C. Suggs, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed. Evidence presented against Suggs included a cell phone found in the suspect vehicle that was linked to him through photos and personal information. Another 18-year-old, Lawrence Bradshaw, Jr., was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed. A phone connected to Bradshaw was also reportedly found in the vehicle.
The legal proceedings for the two suspects took different paths. In September, a judge found probable cause to detain Jaylen Suggs, citing evidence that placed him at the scene and as part of the robbery operation that led to Canty's death. However, in October, a judge dismissed the case against Lawrence Bradshaw, Jr., ruling that there was a lack of probable cause. The judge noted that while Bradshaw's phone was in the car, there was no definitive evidence to prove he was present at the time of the shooting. The case against Suggs is proceeding.
