On a Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Rasheem Bankins, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a shooting that unfolded in the 5000 block of C Street, Southeast, in Washington, D.C. The incident, which occurred at approximately 4:22 p.m., also left another man injured.
Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Sixth District were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire.
Upon their arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services were unable to save Bankins, and he was pronounced dead at the location. The second victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that were described as not life-threatening.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, detectives from the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department have taken charge of the investigation. As of now, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the homicide, and no arrests have been made. The case remains an active and open investigation as police continue to search for those responsible for Bankins' death.
The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and has offered a substantial reward of up to $25,000 for any tip that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime. They have asked the public to contact them directly or to submit information anonymously through their text tip line as they seek to bring closure to the case and deliver justice for Rasheem Bankins.
