On a summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., the life of a young Black woman, Ambria Farmer, was tragically cut short. On July 13, 2024, the 21-year-old from District Heights, Maryland, was discovered in Fort Dupont Park in Southeast D.C., having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. At approximately 2:30 p.m., police responded to a call about an unconscious person in the park. Upon their arrival, they found Farmer, who was pronounced dead at the scene by DC Fire and EMS personnel.
Her family described her as someone who loved her family and friends and enjoyed life.
The investigation into her death was determined to be domestic in nature. Authorities identified her 23-year-old former boyfriend, Desmond Barr Jr. of Northeast, D.C., as the suspect. Evidence gathered by investigators included surveillance footage that allegedly captured Farmer getting into Barr's white Kia Stinger about an hour before her death. Witnesses in the vicinity of the park reported hearing a woman's cries for help followed by the sound of gunshots.
Following an investigation, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Desmond Barr Jr. on July 31, 2024. He was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed. Further legal proceedings revealed a history of domestic violence between Barr and Farmer. Forensic analysis of Barr's vehicle uncovered cleaning supplies, a spent shell casing, and suspected blood stains. A judge later determined there was probable cause to believe that Barr drove Farmer to the park, shot her, and then attempted to dispose of her personal belongings, including her shoes, handbag, and phone.
Desmond Barr Jr., who is paralyzed and uses a wheelchair, has remained in custody following his arrest. His defense attorneys have argued for his release, citing his physical condition and alleged inadequate medical care at the D.C. Jail. However, the court has denied these requests, with the judge asserting that Barr is a danger to the community. The case continues to move through the legal system, with a status hearing scheduled for early 2025.
