On a summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., a dispute turned deadly, claiming the life of 44-year-old Bobby Addison. The incident unfolded on Sunday, July 28, 2024, around 2:43 p.m. in the 3200 block of 28th Street, Southeast. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered Addison unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Addison was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Addison's death led authorities to a suspect, 30-year-old Aaron Jones of Southeast, D.C. According to court documents, the fatal encounter was preceded by a heated argument between Jones and Addison. Witnesses reported that Jones's girlfriend joined the argument and was allegedly struck by Addison, knocking her unconscious. In response, Jones is said to have retrieved a handgun from his apartment and fired at Addison as he was running away.
Months after the shooting, on Monday, December 9, 2024, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Aaron Jones. He was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed under a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. During a preliminary hearing, the prosecution argued that Jones's actions constituted excessive force and were not an act of self-defense, pointing to a pause in the gunfire captured on a Ring camera that suggested an opportunity to retreat. Jones's defense attorney countered that he acted instinctively in a moment of rage following the assault on his girlfriend. A judge ultimately found probable cause that Jones was the perpetrator and did not act in self-defense, ordering him to be held.
