In the evening hours of August 19, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the late summer calm on Stanton Road in Southeast Washington, D.C. When the chaos subsided, two men were found with gunshot wounds. One of them, 19-year-old Vonte Martin, a male resident of Southeast D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, which occurred around 8:25 p.m. in the 3000 block of the street.
For several months, the case remained under investigation, with police appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for tips leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide. The investigation eventually led to a suspect, and on December 18, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with the deadly shooting.
Tyquan Jennings, 26, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Subsequent court proceedings revealed more details about the incident. During a hearing in January 2025, prosecutors presented a cell phone video of the shooting, and a detective testified that multiple witnesses had identified Jennings as the shooter. The detective also stated that Martin and Jennings had exchanged words just before Martin allegedly swung at Jennings. Martin was shot twice, and no weapon was found on his person. Jennings' defense attorney argued for a claim of 'imperfect self-defense,' citing a history of fights between the two men, which Martin had reportedly always won.
Despite the defense's arguments, a judge found probable cause to proceed with the case against Jennings. He was held without bond. In a later court appearance in August 2025, Tyquan Jennings pleaded not guilty to a multi-count indictment that included charges of second-degree murder while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firearm offenses. Due to scheduling conflicts, a jury trial has been tentatively scheduled for April 2027.
