On October 1, 2023, at approximately 9:57 PM, 56-year-old Leo Colter was fatally shot in the 900 block of 15th Street, NW, in McPherson Square, Washington, D.C..

When police responded to the scene due to reports of gunshots, they found Colter slumped over a park bench. Initially, it was not apparent that he had been shot, and officers and EMS personnel suspected a drug overdose.
