The events leading to his death began in the late afternoon when
officers, including Investigator David, attempted to approach a man in a suspicious vehicle in Northeast D.C. The man fled on foot, leading to a chase. During the pursuit, the suspect threw a firearm into a storm drain before escaping on the back of a waiting motorcycle. Later, as Investigator David was working to retrieve the discarded weapon from the storm drain, the firearm discharged. The single shot struck him, causing a fatal injury. In the days that followed, the Metropolitan Police Department identified the man who allegedly discarded the gun as 27-year-old Tyrell Lamonte Bailey. After a search, Bailey turned himself into the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.
