The morning of October 21, 2024, turned tragic at the intersection of 16th Street and Kentucky Avenue in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 9:44 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a young man, 23-year-old Jakele Allen of Northeast, D.C., unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the father of two young daughters was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initially, details were scarce, and the police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. For months, the investigation continued as detectives worked to piece together the events of that Monday morning. The search for a suspect eventually led investigators more than 200 miles away from the capital. On July 24, 2025, the U.S. Marshals' New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended 36-year-old Kareem Thomas in Mount Vernon, New York. Thomas, a resident of the Bronx, was identified as the primary suspect in Allen's death.
In August 2025, Thomas was extradited to Washington, D.C., to face charges of Second Degree Murder while Armed. During preliminary court hearings, details of the fatal encounter began to emerge, presenting conflicting narratives. Prosecutors claimed Thomas's actions were criminal, while his defense attorney argued it was an act of self-defense. The defense contended that Allen had attempted to rob Thomas, prompting Thomas to use Allen's own firearm against him to protect himself. Witness testimony presented in court included descriptions of a shooter in a red coat using a car as a platform to fire a large handgun, and another witness allegedly heard Allen taunt the shooter. A judge ultimately found probable cause to move forward with the homicide case, and Thomas was ordered to remain detained as the legal proceedings continue.
