On the evening of July 1, 2023, 35-year-old African American male Donelle Hunter was fatally shot near his residence in Pompano Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 17th Terrace and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Hunter had just left his home and was en route to a nearby corner store when he was shot.
Despite being conscious upon his mother's arrival at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Broward Health North.
In the aftermath, Hunter's mother, Burnadette Lucas, publicly pleaded for information, describing her son as a quiet individual who would never raise his voice. She expressed her anguish over the loss and urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward, emphasizing the senselessness of the act.
The investigation led by the Broward Sheriff's Office culminated in the arrest of 24-year-old Jaquan Brown from Lauderhill, Florida, on October 16, 2023. Brown was charged with first-degree murder and violation of probation. He was apprehended by BSO's Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response unit and booked into the Broward Main Jail. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.
