Summary based on 9 sources
On December 18, 2023, at approximately 12:40 a.m., 34-year-old Jarrick Dontreal Hoskins was fatally shot inside Leighton's House of Lamb, a restaurant located at 4405 Emancipation Avenue in Houston's Third Ward. Houston Police Department (HPD) officers responded to the scene and found Hoskins suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations revealed that Hoskins and an unidentified male suspect had engaged in a verbal altercation prior to the shooting. The suspect, described initially as a Black male between 30 to 35 years old, fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Further investigation led authorities to identify the suspect as 32-year-old Cedric Denzil Brooks. On January 30, 2024, the Harris County District Attorney's Office filed a murder charge against Brooks. A citywide manhunt ensued, culminating in Brooks' arrest by the HPD Narcotics Tactical Team on March 7, 2024. He was taken into custody without incident.

Following his arrest, Brooks was held on a $300,000 bond. His criminal history, which includes multiple convictions dating back to 2009 for offenses such as criminal trespass, theft, and burglary, has prompted calls for bond reform. Advocates, including Hoskins' mother, are urging legislative changes to grant judges greater discretion in denying bond to habitual offenders.

Hoskins' family remembers him as a loving father of two who was striving to turn his life around after previous legal troubles. His mother emphasized that his past should not overshadow the person he was, stating, "He was a great person, he was loved, and a human."

The tragic incident has intensified discussions about gun violence in Houston's minority communities, with calls for more effective measures to address and prevent such acts. As the legal proceedings against Brooks continue, Hoskins' family and community members seek justice and systemic change to prevent further tragedies.
