On August 3, 2024, a dispute over a handicapped parking space at Hart's Landing fishing pier in Sarasota, Florida, resulted in the fatal shooting of Jonathan Lee Arias. The incident began when Richard Minor, a 66-year-old left-leg amputee, became agitated and confrontational after Arias, along with his wife and a friend, parked in the handicapped space. Minor questioned whether Arias was disabled, leading to a heated exchange between the two men.
The confrontation escalated when Minor continued to harass Arias and his companions from a distance. After about 15 minutes, Arias and his group decided to leave, but Arias drove in the wrong direction, which further angered Minor. When Arias got out of his truck and approached Minor's vehicle, Minor sprayed bear spray at Arias through the open window. Arias then walked around to the driver's side door, at which point Minor allegedly fired multiple shots, striking Arias.
Witnesses reported that Minor fired around seven or eight shots. Arias' wife and friend attempted to help him, but Minor pointed a gun at them, threatening Arias' wife. When officers from the Sarasota Police Department arrived, they found Arias on the ground and Minor in his car with a gun on his right leg. Arias was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
Minor was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During his arrest, Minor told police that he had been drinking and that people often park illegally in disabled spaces. He also claimed that Arias had threatened him, saying "I'll f*** you up" after Minor questioned him. Minor pleaded not guilty and remains in the Sarasota County Jail on no bond, with his next court date scheduled.
The incident highlights the extreme escalation of a dispute over parking, reminiscent of other high-profile confrontations involving parking and stand-your-ground laws.
