James Sasser, a 31-year-old resident of Sarasota, Florida, was found dead on September 13, 2016. His body was discovered in the doorway of a neighboring home on Rita Street, where he had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The investigation revealed that Sasser had attempted to forcibly enter the home at 1867 Rita Street, which belonged to Robert Setti. Evidence at the scene, including a splintered door and footage from a motion-sensor camera, supported Setti's claim of self-defense. Setti, along with two female witnesses, testified that Sasser had broken into the house, prompting Setti to shoot in defense. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, in consultation with the State Attorney's Office and the Medical Examiner's Office, concluded that Setti acted in self-defense and no charges were filed against him for the shooting.
However, the investigation did not end there. During a subsequent search of Setti's home, deputies discovered a significant quantity of drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, ketamine, and marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia. As a result, Setti and the two female witnesses, Kathryn Ashley Nichole Vesh and Monica Esparza, were arrested on multiple drug charges. Setti faced six felony charges related to drug possession and was released on a $7,000 bond. Vesh and Esparza also faced charges, with Vesh being held on a $2,000 bond and Esparza on charges in Charlotte County.
