Daniel Ortiz, a 44-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on September 28, 2015, in Sarasota, Florida. The incident occurred when Sarasota police officers responded to a call about a car accident in the 1500 block of 25th Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Ortiz suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Ortiz succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that Ortiz had been involved in a dispute over the sale of narcotics with Diandrew L. Clarkson, a 22-year-old African American male from Tampa. During the altercation, Clarkson pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Ortiz, who then drove a short distance before crashing into a tree.
Following the incident, Clarkson was arrested a few days later in Tampa, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Sarasota Police Department, the United States Marshal’s Florida regional fugitive task force, and the Tampa Police Department. Witnesses reported that the dispute between Ortiz and Clarkson was over a $40 drug debt. Clarkson was charged with second-degree murder and was found guilty in February 2017. The conviction was the result of diligent work by the Sarasota Police Department and the State Attorney’s Office.
In April 2017, Clarkson was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Daniel Ortiz. The case highlighted the dangers associated with drug-related disputes and the severe consequences that can arise from such conflicts.
