On March 27, 2016, Jason W. Head, a 35-year-old resident of Sarasota, Florida, was fatally shot outside a property on Myakka Road. Initially, the homeowner, James Cain, 61, reported to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office that he had shot Head in self-defense. Cain claimed that Head had arrived at his property and began firing a gun at him, prompting Cain to return fire and kill Head. However, this account was later contradicted by video evidence obtained from security cameras on Cain's property.
The investigation revealed that the security cameras, which Cain had initially claimed were inoperable, had captured the incident. The footage showed that Cain, along with his son, Robert Cain, 32, and Robert's girlfriend, Racquel Pontbriand, 27, had staged the crime scene. The video depicted James and Robert Cain conversing over Head's lifeless body and placing a gun in his hand to make it appear as though Head had been armed and had instigated the shooting. Shortly after the incident, Pontbriand arrived at the scene to pick up Robert Cain.
As a result of the investigation, James Cain was charged with principal to second-degree murder with a firearm, Robert Cain was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, and Racquel Pontbriand was charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. The Sheriff's Office indicated that the motive behind the murder might be related to a recent breakup between Head and a member of the Cain family. Both Robert Cain and Racquel Pontbriand had prior criminal records, including charges for burglary, possession of a weapon by a felon, drug possession, and dealing in stolen property.
The case highlighted the importance of thorough investigative work and the role of digital forensics in uncovering the truth. The video evidence was crucial in disproving the initial self-defense claim and led to the arrests and charges against the three individuals involved. All three suspects were held without bail at the Sarasota County Jail as they awaited further legal proceedings.
