As the investigation progressed, on July 21, 2016, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Tannis Phillips Jr., a Sarasota resident with a lengthy criminal history. Phillips was apprehended with the assistance of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office at the intersection of University Parkway and Tuttle Avenue in Sarasota. He was charged with second-degree murder and held at the Manatee County Jail without bond. Phillips's criminal record included charges of robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, grand theft, and several drug-related offenses.
