In the early morning hours of June 30, 2023, the life of 35-year-old Eliut Canales, a Hispanic male from Waterbury, Connecticut, was cut short by violence. Around 2 a.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the quiet near North Main and East Farms streets. Responding to the reports, police officers arrived at a chaotic scene. A vehicle had crashed into the Ingpirca Bar and Restaurant located at 807 N.

Inside the crashed car, officers discovered Canales, the driver, suffering from a gunshot wound. Medical attention was rendered, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed determined that Canales had been shot, leading to the crash that ended his life. His death was subsequently ruled a homicide.
As of July 2025, the investigation into the shooting death of Eliut Canales remains open and active.
