Nathan Riley and his fiancée, Lyndsay Long, had been living in Colorado Springs for less than a year and were just days away from moving back south to be closer to family in Alabama or Florida. The couple, who had recently gotten engaged, were staying in a vacant business building owned by Riley’s brother-in-law. Riley was a 37-year-old White man.
On the morning of Sunday, February 11, 2024, just before 10 a.m., police received a call about a suspicious death at a residence in a strip
mall in the 3600 block of Galley Road. The caller reported that the front door had been busted open with a baseball bat, and glass was scattered on the pavement. When officers arrived, they found Nathan Riley inside, lying on the floor in a gray bathrobe. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy conducted the following day by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office determined he had died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Homicide Unit immediately took over the case, which was the city’s second homicide of the year. Investigators interviewed Riley’s fiancée, who told them that on the night before his death, she had felt she “needed a break” and had gone to spend time with a friend, Brian Baldwin. She said that while their relationship was not romantic, she believed Baldwin wished it were. She told police he had picked her up from the Galley Road residence and that she had fallen asleep at his home.
Within days, the investigation led to multiple arrests. On February 13, police obtained an arrest warrant for Brian Baldwin, 43, and his charges were later amended to First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Burglary. That same day, police also took 55-year-old William Dunnington into custody on charges of Second-Degree Murder and First-Degree Burglary. A third suspect, 37-year-old Brandon Bohl, was arrested on February 16 by a SWAT team and charged with First-Degree Murder.
All three men were booked into the El Paso County Jail. As of March 2024, the investigation was still considered active.
