In the quiet community of Security-Widefield in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado, a tragedy unfolded on the morning of May 16, 2024, forever altering the lives of a local family. Responding to a welfare check just after 9 a.m., deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office arrived at a residence on Cottonwood Drive. Inside, they discovered the bodies of 25-year-old Hispanic female Esmeralda Contreras-Mata and 31-year-old Thabiso Makhafola.
