On a Sunday night in Little Rock, Arkansas, tragedy struck a gathering of young people. On March 26, 2023, patrol officers from the 12th Street Division were alerted to gunfire by a Shot Spotter activation in the vicinity of 3002 Washington Street. They responded to the scene around 9:25 p.m. to find a chaotic situation with multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Among the victims was Malachi Carey, a 20-year-old male, who was found with severe injuries and pronounced dead
at the scene. Emergency services transported six other victims to local hospitals for treatment. Another 20-year-old, Jailene Washington, succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the hospital. The shooting left a total of two dead and five others wounded, one of whom was reported to be in serious condition.
In the aftermath, Homicide Detectives and the Crime Scene Search Unit began their investigation. Little Rock Police Chief Heath Helton noted that a large number of cars had been gathered at the location where the shooting took place. Authorities immediately started to canvass the area, searching for any witnesses and video surveillance that might shed light on the events of that night. While the investigation was described as ongoing, with police conducting interviews and serving search warrants, no immediate arrests were announced in connection with the deadly shooting.
