In Little Rock, Arkansas, the life of Casandra Peña Romero, a 27-year-old female emergency medical dispatcher, was cut tragically short in August of 2023. On the evening of August 19th, as she was leaving her job at the Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services headquarters, a place where she had dedicated herself to helping others since July 2021, she was shot in the parking lot. Moments before the attack, she had sent an "SOS" text to her colleagues inside, a desperate plea for help.
Her coworkers rushed out to find her bleeding beside her car and immediately began to render aid. Casandra was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and fought for her life for four days before she succumbed to her injuries on August 23rd. Even in death, her commitment to saving lives continued as she was an organ donor.
The investigation into her shooting quickly focused on her estranged husband, 23-year-old Omar Pena-Romero. He was a former employee at MEMS, but his employment had been terminated earlier that month. The couple, who had been married since October 2019 and shared a young son, were in the midst of a contentious divorce. Casandra had filed for divorce on August 11th, just days before the shooting, following Omar's arrest for allegedly raping and assaulting her. A judge had issued a no-contact order against him, ordering him to stay away from both Casandra's home and her workplace. Prior to these events, court records indicated that Omar had voluntarily committed himself to a psychiatric unit and had shown his wife a suicide note.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Omar Pena-Romero was initiated. He was apprehended by police near Texarkana, Arkansas, just hours after the attack. Initially, he was charged with first-degree domestic battery and violation of the no-contact order. After Casandra's death, these charges were upgraded to capital murder. While in jail awaiting trial, Omar penned a letter confessing to the killing, expressing that he felt he had lost everything and let "the evil" win. He later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with a firearm enhancement. As a result of his guilty plea, Omar Pena-Romero was sentenced to 60 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections for the murder of his estranged wife.
