In the rural setting of Calico Rock, Arkansas, a tragic incident cut short the life of 44-year-old Golden Reed Stowers. On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 6, 2023, what began as a routine day ended in an unforeseen fatality. Stowers, a White male, was at his home on County Road 74, west of Calico Rock, engaged in the task of loading a car onto a trailer with two other individuals.
The group decided to take a break from their work.
As they were walking from a field towards the house, a pivotal moment unfolded. After opening a gate, Stowers reached for a holstered gun he was carrying. In a sudden and unintentional turn of events, the firearm discharged, inflicting a fatal wound.
One of the people with him immediately assisted Stowers into the house, where he collapsed. Emergency services were promptly summoned to the scene. Baxter County deputies, along with Air-Evac, a Baxter Health ambulance, and personnel from the Lone Rock Fire Department all responded to the call. Despite their life-saving efforts, Golden Reed Stowers was pronounced dead at his home.
The Baxter County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the shooting. The authorities ultimately determined that the incident was a tragic accident. Their findings indicated that the gunshot was self-inflicted and not intentional, leading to the conclusion that no foul play was involved. Consequently, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in connection with his death.
