In the quiet community of West Union, West Virginia, the life of 10-year-old Nathaniel "Nate" Russell Layfield, a White male, came to a tragic end on July 24, 2023. The young boy, born in Bridgeport, was a fourth-grade student at Victory Elementary School who was known for his big heart and love for his family and friends.
Nate was a boy of many interests. He was an avid fan of Pokemon and Harry Potter, and he enjoyed the creative challenge of building with Legos.
He shared a special bond with his stepfather, Timmy "Tim Tom" Sponaugle, with whom he loved to go fishing. His adventurous spirit was evident in his enjoyment of riding 4-wheelers and his enthusiasm for helping his "racing buddies." Displaying an early entrepreneurial spirit, Nate had even started his own neighborhood weed-eating business. He was also a dedicated athlete, playing for the Doddridge County Youth Football League as number 51.
The circumstances surrounding Nate's death were devastating. Authorities investigated the incident as a murder-suicide. News reports confirmed that two individuals were found deceased in what was described as an apparent murder-suicide in the Wilsonburg area.
Nate's favorite color was red, a vibrant hue that mirrored his own energetic and loving personality. In his memory, his family requested that those attending his visitation and funeral service wear red to honor him. He is remembered by his parents, grandparents, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as many friends who were touched by his brief but bright life. He also left behind his beloved pets, cats Pepper and Hermoine, and his dog, Hank.
