In the early morning hours of September 15, 2024, a dispute in Des Moines, Iowa's Court Avenue Entertainment District turned deadly, resulting in the death of 34-year-old Oscar Matthew Marquez Jr., a Black male. The incident, which unfolded around 2 a.m. near the intersection of Court Avenue and Water Street, also claimed the life of 29-year-old Dennis Morris Hawkins Jr. and left a third man, aged 29, with critical injuries.
