In the winter of 2020, a friendly visit in Tucson, Arizona, turned into a tragedy that ended the life of 55-year-old Jeffrey Ray Hunter. A Black male, Hunter was at a friend's home on West Blacklidge Drive on the evening of December 23rd when an argument erupted among those present. The disagreement quickly escalated, shattering the peace of the night with the sound of gunfire.
Responding to reports of the shooting, Tucson Police officers discovered Hunter with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Banner-University Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Jeffrey Ray Hunter succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
Detectives began an investigation, interviewing witnesses and processing the scene for evidence. Their work led them to identify 39-year-old Richard Junior Miller as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. In early January 2021, a warrant was issued for Miller's arrest, and he was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Pima County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder. Authorities believe that other individuals who were at the residence at the time of the argument and shooting left before police arrived.
