In the early morning hours of January 7, 2019, a tragic event unfolded at the Casa Verde Apartment Complex located at 5454 W. Indian School Road in Phoenix, Arizona, leading to the death of 23-year-old Gary Herrera. A male, Herrera was a father and was known to be deaf. His life was cut short in a sudden act of violence that continues to await resolution.
On that Monday, at approximately 5:53 a.m., Herrera was observed in the company of two individuals near a red four-door sedan that was
backed into a parking space within the apartment complex. A short time later, a friend of Herrera's heard the distinct sound of a gunshot. Immediately following the shot, the red sedan was seen quickly leaving the parking lot, fleeing the scene.
First responders found Herrera lying on the ground, unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced deceased shortly after. The Phoenix Police Department initiated a homicide investigation into his death.
Investigators have sought information from the public to help piece together the events of that morning. The suspects have been described as two Black males. As of now, the case remains unsolved, and authorities continue to seek any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Gary Herrera's death. A reward has been offered for information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
