Thomas Polimeni, a 39-year-old resident of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on April 15, 2019. The circumstances surrounding his death are linked to a tragic incident involving a self-driving Uber vehicle. On the night of March 18, 2018, Polimeni was struck by an Uber SUV that was operating in autonomous mode. The vehicle, a Volvo XC90, was traveling at about 40 mph in a 35 mph zone when it failed to detect Polimeni, who was pushing a bicycle across the road outside of a crosswalk.
