Seventeen-year-old Luis Angel Lopez Jr., known to his loved ones as 'Junior,' was fatally wounded on Friday, June 7, 2019. The young man, who was a student at Sonoran Science Academy with dreams of following in his father's footsteps by joining the military, was a beloved son, brother, and a role model to his younger siblings.
His kind and respectful nature, coupled with a bright smile, left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
The events of that fateful day unfolded at a residence on North Country Home Lane. According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, the shooting appeared to be a tragic accident. The person identified as being involved was Luis's 19-year-old uncle, Raymundo Lopez-Casillas. Reports indicate that Lopez-Casillas was unloading an AK-47 in his room when he, unaware that a bullet was still in the chamber, accidentally discharged the weapon. The round traveled through a wall and struck his nephew in the back of the head. His mother, Jessica Lopez, found him without a heartbeat.
The subsequent investigation by law enforcement took a startling turn. While looking into the circumstances of the shooting, detectives discovered a cache of dangerous weapons inside the home. This included a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, several homemade pipe bombs, and the AK-47 involved in the incident. The Pima Regional Bomb Squad was called to the scene to safely remove the explosives, and the investigation was eventually handed over to federal authorities.
While the shooting itself was ruled accidental and no charges were filed in direct relation to Luis's death, Raymundo Lopez-Casillas was arrested. He faced federal charges stemming from the discovery of the explosive devices within the residence. The family, while grieving the profound loss of their son, expressed that they did not believe Lopez-Casillas would have ever intentionally harmed his nephew, with whom he was very close.
