In the late summer of 2024, the community of Tucson, Arizona, was shaken by the tragic death of Santiago Jimenez Herrera, a 36-year-old Hispanic man. On the afternoon of August 21st, his body was discovered in a desert area in the 7400 block of South Wilmot Road. Authorities who responded to a 9-1-1 call about a shooting just before 12:15 p.m. found Mr. Jimenez Herrera with gunshot trauma and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into his death was quickly classified as a homicide.
Santiago Jimenez Herrera was known as a devoted father of four and a skilled diesel mechanic. His family and friends remembered him as a generous and kind-hearted individual, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, even offering his mechanic skills to stranded motorists free of charge. His sudden and violent death left a profound void in the lives of his loved ones and the wider community.
The Tucson Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately began an intensive investigation. Detectives processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses, which led them to identify a suspect: 26-year-old Crist Lee Defrenchi. The investigation revealed that Defrenchi and Jimenez Herrera were acquaintances who had been involved in previous conflicts. A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Defrenchi's arrest.
On August 26, 2024, a breakthrough in the case came when law enforcement received information on Defrenchi's whereabouts. A coordinated effort involving the Tucson Police Department's SWAT, K9 Unit, and Community Response Teams, with assistance from the Pima County Sheriff's Department, tracked the suspect across Tucson's east side. Later that day, officers converged on Defrenchi in a desert area near Old Vail Road and South Rita Road and took him into custody without incident. Crist Lee Defrenchi was subsequently booked into the Pima County Jail, facing a charge of first-degree murder.
