In the early morning hours of June 20, 2019, Ricardo De La Isla, a 29-year-old male, was killed in a violent encounter in Surprise, Arizona. The incident, which also resulted in the death of 26-year-old Joseph Hutchinson, unfolded around 3:40 a.m. Investigators later determined that the two men were lured to the location under false pretenses as part of a robbery plot.
Authorities were drawn to the scene where they discovered the bodies of De La Isla and Hutchinson.
While securing the area, a call came in from a resident approximately two blocks away, reporting a man with a gunshot wound to his arm banging on their front door. The man, identified as Chasten Fairris, an El Mirage resident, asked the resident to call for medical help but not the police. Responding officers and fire-medical personnel transported Fairris to a local hospital for treatment.
Through their investigation, detectives learned that Fairris and Hutchinson had conspired to rob De La Isla. They had reportedly called De La Isla, asking him to come over with the intention of luring him away from a nearby home to rob him. After receiving medical treatment for his injuries, Chasten Fairris was taken into custody by the Surprise Police Department. He was subsequently arrested on two counts of first-degree murder for his involvement in the deaths of Ricardo De La Isla and Joseph Hutchinson and transported to the Maricopa County 4th Avenue jail.
