In the early morning hours of New Year's Day in Surprise, Arizona, a verbal dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 20-year-old Xavier Elias. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in a neighborhood near Greenway Road and Grand Avenue, shattering the holiday's peace.
Witnesses reported that an argument had broken out between Elias and a neighbor, 39-year-old Manuel Vera Gonzales.
Gonzales later told investigators that he and friends were sitting around a fire when he and Elias exchanged words on multiple occasions throughout the evening. The nature of their disagreement was not made public.
The confrontation took a deadly turn when Gonzales allegedly retrieved an AR-15 rifle he had 'staged' in his yard. According to Gonzales's account to the police, he claimed Elias had pointed a gun at him. An exchange of gunfire followed, during which Elias was struck multiple times. His friends rushed him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
When police arrived at the scene, they were met by Gonzales. After interviewing him and other witnesses, and collecting evidence, detectives arrested Gonzales. He was subsequently booked into jail on a charge of second-degree murder. Authorities have described the shooting as an isolated incident and have stated there is no further threat to the community.
