In the early morning hours of November 20, 2019, the life of 17-year-old David Ruggiero was tragically cut short in a parking lot on North Wilmot Road in Tucson, Arizona. The male teen, who had recently moved to the area with his family, was found wounded by police around 5:20 a.m. Despite the immediate medical aid provided by officers and the Tucson Fire Department, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The tragic event unfolded after David's family reported him missing earlier
that day. His mother shared on social media that he had left their home around 1:30 a.m. and had contacted his brother around 4 a.m., saying he was visiting a girl and expected to be home within an hour. However, he never returned. Two days later, the family's search came to a devastating end when the victim of the Wilmot Road shooting was officially identified as David Ruggiero.
In the weeks that followed, the Tucson Police Department made two arrests in connection with the homicide. On December 6, 2019, investigators apprehended 22-year-old Jose Manuel Aguirre. Ten days later, on December 16, 17-year-old Jonathan O. Gallardo was also taken into custody. Both suspects were charged with a string of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated robbery, and kidnapping. Authorities also linked Gallardo and Aguirre to a separate shooting that occurred just hours after Ruggiero's death, in which another man was injured.
The family, who had recently relocated to Vail from Phoenix, was left shattered by the sudden and violent loss. Described as a 'beautiful soul,' his aunt organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and to transport his body back to Phoenix, a place he grew up in and loved. The community rallied around the grieving family, surpassing the fundraising goal. His obituary remembered him as a young man who enjoyed making music and had an affinity for 'cool' cars.
