In Flagstaff, Arizona, a sense of shock and sorrow befell the local police department and the wider community with the passing of 31-year-old Jarrett Kristopher Shughart. On Saturday, September 12, 2020, fellow officers from the Flagstaff Police Department made a grim discovery after being dispatched to conduct a welfare check at Shughart's residence.
Inside his home, they found the young male officer deceased.
Initial reports from authorities indicated that there were no other individuals present at the home when the officers arrived. The Flagstaff Police Department stated that Shughart’s death was the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the wake of the incident, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office took over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Jarrett Shughart had been a dedicated member of the Flagstaff Police Department since October 2014, where he served in various capacities, including as a field training officer. At the time of his death, he had been assigned to lighter duties due to a work-related injury. In a statement, the City of Flagstaff and the police department expressed their profound condolences to Officer Shughart's family and friends, as members of the Crisis Intervention Stress Management Team were brought in to support the grieving department personnel. His family, while requesting privacy during the difficult time, planned a casual celebration of his life for a later date.
