On July 10, 2019, 24-year-old Wayne Phillips was fatally shot in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident stemmed from a dispute involving Bryant Woodley, the ex-boyfriend of Phillips' pregnant girlfriend. Evidence presented in court showed that Woodley followed Phillips before shooting him once behind the right ear.

Woodley had a history of domestic violence arrests involving allegations from two of his ex-girlfriends. Just two days before the fatal shooting of Phillips, Woodley had assaulted another ex-girlfriend.
On March 10, 2020, a jury found Bryant Woodley guilty of first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and possession of a regulated firearm by a prohibited person. Following his conviction, Woodley was sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years. The State's Attorney expressed hope that the sentence would bring some measure of justice and closure to Phillips' family.
