In the summer of 2023, a violent encounter in South Baltimore tragically cut short the life of 21-year-old Dashaun J. Waters. On the evening of July 25th, Waters was with a group of people in the 3200 block of Hollins Ferry Road. In a sudden and coordinated attack, three men reportedly opened fire on the gathering before making their escape in a silver Nissan driven by a fourth accomplice.
The vehicle, which did not have a license plate, was recovered by authorities the following day.
The shooting resulted in the death of another young man, 20-year-old Di'Shon Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save him. Waters sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He fought for his life for two days before ultimately succumbing to his injuries on July 27, 2023.
An investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of two men, Tyrone Payne, 24, and Vincent Harris, 27. Both men were charged in connection with the fatal shootings. Payne faced multiple counts, including first-degree murder and firearm use in a felony or violent crime.
During the subsequent trial, testimony from Payne's ex-girlfriend provided key details for the prosecution. She informed the court that the silver Nissan used as the getaway car was hers and that Payne had taken it on the night of the incident. She also alleged that Payne had instructed her to falsely report the car as stolen to law enforcement. The trial was marked by emotional moments, particularly when a crime lab technician presented photographs of Waters' injuries, causing distress among his family members present in the courtroom.
