On the night of January 5, 2021, the life of 39-year-old Jessica Kennedy, a White Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in a North Phoenix apartment. Police were called to the residence near 35th Avenue and Bell Road for a welfare check just before midnight. Upon entering the apartment, they discovered Jessica with a fatal gunshot wound to her head.
The weapon used in the shooting was conspicuously absent from the scene, launching an immediate and intensive investigation into her death.
Suspicion quickly fell upon her 63-year-old boyfriend, Cecil Noyola Jr. In the days leading up to the discovery of Jessica's body, Noyola had reportedly been exhibiting erratic behavior. Following the murder, he fled the state of Arizona in an attempt to evade law enforcement. However, his time as a fugitive was short-lived. On January 7, 2021, just two days after Jessica's death, Cecil Noyola Jr. turned himself in to the authorities, taking a crucial step in the path toward accountability for his actions.
After his surrender, Noyola admitted to his involvement in the aftermath of the crime. He confessed to having given the murder weapon to a friend, and the gun was subsequently recovered by police after that friend was arrested. The investigation proceeded, and Noyola was charged with the murder of his girlfriend. In March 2024, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. On July 17, 2024, Cecil Noyola Jr. was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Jessica Kennedy and an additional three years for tampering with evidence. He also received a 10-year sentence for a separate weapons charge, which is to be served concurrently with his other sentences, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a devastating act of violence.
