In the summer of 2021, Destiny Chaneice McClain, a 23-year-old Black female, was known by her loved ones as a creative and kind-hearted person with a warm spirit. A resident of Phoenix, Arizona, she was described as a 'homebody' who typically preferred the comfort of her home, where she would sew and design, to going out. Her family remembers her as a nurturing soul who always had a kind word for everyone she met.
On the evening of July 17, 2021, Destiny decided to go out to support a
friend. In the early hours of July 18, at approximately 3:23 a.m., she and her friend were ordering from a food truck located in a bustling parking lot near 17th Street and McDowell Road. Suddenly, the lively atmosphere was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots. In the ensuing chaos, it became horrifically clear that Destiny had been struck by a bullet. Bystanders rushed to her aid, attempting to administer CPR while waiting for emergency services to arrive. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced deceased.
The Phoenix Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the tragic and senseless shooting. Detectives have stated that they do not believe Destiny was the intended target of the gunfire. Instead, it is believed she was the unfortunate victim of a stray bullet fired into the crowd from a vehicle. To date, her case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made.
In their efforts to find those responsible, authorities have released surveillance video showing a vehicle of interest. The car is described as a newer model, dark-colored, four-door sedan that was seen leaving the area, heading eastbound on McDowell Road from 17th Street, shortly after the shooting occurred. Destiny’s family, heartbroken by their loss, continues to hold out hope for justice. They have pleaded with the public for any information that might lead to the identification and arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for cutting short the life of a young woman who had so much more to give. A reward is being offered for information leading to a resolution in the case.
