On a summer day in Phoenix, Arizona, the lives of three young people were brought to a violent and tragic end. On July 15, 1999, AnnMarie Merchant, a young woman, was brutally murdered in her apartment. She was not the only victim of the horrific events that unfolded that day. Her brother, 17-year-old Roscoe Anthony Merchant Jr., and her girlfriend, Cindy Richards, were also killed.
The crime was particularly savage, leaving a lasting scar on the community and the families of the victims.
The perpetrator of this triple homicide was 18-year-old Eugene Robert Tucker, who had previously been in a relationship with AnnMarie. The night before the murders, AnnMarie had refused Tucker's attempts to visit her. In the early hours of the following morning, Tucker forced his way into the apartment where AnnMarie, her brother, and her girlfriend were. He first shot Roscoe and Cindy as they slept. He then subjected AnnMarie to a brutal assault before shooting her twice in the head.
The investigation into the gruesome crime led police to Eugene Robert Tucker, who was promptly arrested. He was charged with a litany of offenses, including three counts of first-degree murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, and burglary. The subsequent legal proceedings culminated in Tucker's conviction on all charges in 2000. Given the heinous and cruel nature of his crimes, the court handed down three death sentences, one for each of the lives he had taken, in addition to lengthy prison terms for the other offenses. The convictions and death sentences were upheld after appeals, and Tucker remains on death row in Arizona.
