On the evening of January 5, 2022, a violent act shattered the peace of a home in the Ahwatukee neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona. Monique Kistner, a 60-year-old White woman, was shot and killed inside her residence. The incident unfolded in what neighbors described as a typically quiet area, leaving the community in shock.
Around 5:15 p.m., a 911 operator received a call from a man who stated that his mother had been shot and was dying.
Phoenix police officers were dispatched to the home, located near 5th Avenue and Chandler Boulevard. When they arrived, they found 33-year-old Robert Kistner, the victim's son, walking out of the house with his hands in the air.
As officers were placing him in handcuffs, Robert Kistner told them that he had shot his mother twice. Police entered the home and discovered Monique Kistner unresponsive. They carried her outside to where fire department personnel were waiting, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined she had been shot twice with a rifle at close range.
Robert Kistner was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. During questioning, he allegedly told detectives that his relationship with his parents had not been good. Authorities did not release any other information regarding a possible motive for the shooting. As of January 2022, the investigation was ongoing.
