In the early morning hours of June 4, 2021, a senseless act of violence tragically cut short the life of 17-year-old Eunice Rodriguez in Phoenix, Arizona. A junior at Carl Hayden High School, Eunice had dreams of becoming a nurse and was known as the loving core of her family, with six siblings who adored her. Tragically, family members later revealed that Eunice was in her second trimester of pregnancy at the time of her death.
The devastating events unfolded around 1 a.m. near 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Eunice was a passenger in a car being driven by her mother, with her younger brother also in the vehicle. They were on their way home after Eunice's car had run out of gas. They came across a man in the middle of the road who appeared to have blood on his clothing. Believing he was injured and in need of help, Eunice's mother stopped the car.
As the man, later identified as Francisco Sanchez, approached the passenger side of the vehicle, he brandished a firearm and opened fire. Eunice was struck by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. A witness who worked as a security guard at a nearby bar heard the mother's frantic screams for help and described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking.
Following the shooting, Sanchez fled but was apprehended by police shortly after. It was later reported that just moments before the fatal shooting, Sanchez had allegedly attempted to carjack another vehicle that managed to escape. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges including murder and kidnapping. The community and Eunice's family were left to mourn the sudden and random loss of a young life full of promise.
