In the summer of 2021, a senseless act of negligence shattered a Phoenix family and cut short the promising life of 15-year-old Graciela Andrea Molina. The young female was in her second-story bedroom on the evening of Friday, June 25th, near 48th Street and Broadway Road, surrounded by family as they assembled a new bed. What should have been a simple, happy moment was irrevocably broken by the sound of a gunshot from a nearby field.
A single bullet, fired recklessly from over 100 yards
away, pierced through Graciela's bedroom window and struck her. Paramedics rushed the critically injured teenager to a local hospital, but her wounds proved fatal. The stray bullet that ended her life was later described by authorities as the result of 'recreational' shooting in the area. The tragic randomness of her death left her family, friends, and the wider community devastated and searching for answers. Known to her loved ones as Andrea, she was remembered as a bright young woman who loved to study and had aspirations of attending college.
The Phoenix Police Department immediately launched an investigation, starting with very few leads. A breakthrough came when a courageous member of the community came forward with crucial information after witnessing someone firing a gun in a field near the Molina home. This tip, combined with key physical and forensic evidence, led investigators to 35-year-old Fernando Pina. Detectives were able to match shell casings from the scene to a spent casing discovered in Pina's car.
Just two days after the fatal shooting, on Sunday, June 27th, Fernando Pina was arrested in connection with Graciela's death. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter, two counts of endangerment, and two counts of discharging a firearm within city limits. Authorities described Pina as an average person who made a terrible and reckless decision that had irreversible and heartbreaking consequences. His bond was set at $750,000, and he was ordered not to possess any weapons and to stay away from the scene of the shooting.
