In the morning hours of a Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 42-year-old Rene Romero was tragically cut short. On February 12, 2022, a dispute unfolded in the rear parking lot of the Roger Plaza Apartments, situated at 102 W. Roger Road, near North Oracle Road. The disagreement escalated to violence, culminating in a fatal shooting. Multiple 911 calls were placed around 9:20 a.m., alerting police to the sound of gunfire and a possible victim inside a vehicle.
Upon their arrival at
the apartment complex, officers discovered Romero in a vehicle, suffering from gunshot trauma. Emergency medical services were promptly rendered, and he was quickly transported to Banner-University Medical Center for further treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Rene Romero succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The initial investigation at the scene indicated that no one else was injured during the incident.
In the days that followed, homicide detectives with the Tucson Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their investigation into the dispute in the parking lot pointed to a suspect. On February 18, 2022, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of 18-year-old Koby Evan Dylan Kemp. He was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Rene Romero.
