On the evening of June 11, 2022, 60-year-old Pamela Rae Martinez was finishing her last delivery for the day as an Uber Eats driver in Glendale, Arizona. She was just minutes from home when an encounter on the road would tragically cut her life short. For reasons that remain unclear, Martinez pulled her car over to the side of the road, and a van pulled up alongside her.
In a moment of forethought that would later prove crucial to the investigation, she took a photograph of the man sitting in the driver's seat of the van.
Shortly after this, a witness saw a man standing outside Martinez's car before he got back into his van and drove away. Martinez's vehicle then slowly drifted off the road and came to a stop in a landscaping area. When police responded to what initially appeared to be a single-car accident, they found Martinez unresponsive in the driver's seat. It was soon discovered that she had been shot and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The photograph Pamela Rae Martinez took became the key piece of evidence in solving her own murder. Police were able to identify the man in the picture as 62-year-old Rusty French. When investigators questioned French, he admitted that he was the man in the photo but claimed to have 'blacked out' and could not remember the shooting. A search of French's home revealed multiple handguns, one of which was a ballistic match to the weapon used in the homicide.
Authorities believe the motive for the shooting may have been a road rage incident, as Martinez and French did not know each other. Rusty French was arrested on June 23, 2022, and charged with second-degree murder. Law enforcement officials and Martinez's family have stated that her quick thinking in taking the photograph was instrumental in bringing her alleged killer to justice.
