On a summer morning in Tucson, Arizona, a routine duty turned into a scene of immense tragedy. Pima County Constable Deborah Martinez-Garibay, a 43-year-old female and a veteran of the U.S. Army, was killed in the line of duty on August 25, 2022. She was at the Lind Commons Apartments to serve an eviction notice, a task she had performed many times, but this time it would be her last.
Accompanied by the apartment complex manager, Angela Fox-Heath, Martinez-Garibay approached the residence of Gavin Lee Stansell. As they attempted to carry out the eviction, Stansell opened fire. The sudden violence claimed the lives of both women. When police arrived, they found Fox-Heath in a courtyard and Martinez-Garibay inside the apartment, both having succumbed to their injuries.
The devastation did not end there. Authorities discovered that Stansell had also taken the life of a neighbor, Elijah Miranda, before turning the gun on himself. The investigation revealed that the shooter, Gavin Lee Stansell, had a history of threatening behavior, as an eviction complaint filed earlier that month mentioned he had intimidated neighbors with a firearm. With the suspect deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, no arrests were made in connection with the triple murder-suicide that cut short the lives of three individuals.
