In the early morning hours of August 27, 2022, a gathering of people and cars in a parking lot in the 4600 block of East Speedway Boulevard in Tucson, Arizona, turned tragic. Forty-three-year-old Joseph 'Pnut' Micheal Hunter, an African American male, was present at the scene when an altercation broke out amongst the crowd. The dispute escalated, leading to gunshots being fired.
Hunter was struck by the gunfire, sustaining life-threatening injuries.
He was quickly transported to Banner-University Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Joseph Hunter succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His death prompted an investigation by the Tucson Police Department, who began to piece together the events of that fatal morning.
Detectives working the case believed that several witnesses at the large gathering may have captured the confrontation and the shooting on their cell phones and urged the public to come forward with any information. Their investigation led to the identification of a suspect. The Tucson Police Department later arrested a man named Fortune in connection with the homicide. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Pima County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder, with his bond set at $500,000.
