Laughter and music spilled out into the surrounding neighborhood near 27th Street and South Mountain Avenue, where dozens of cars lined the streets. Among the crowd on August 28, 2022, was 21-year-old Xavier Paul Martinez, a Hispanic male.
Just having celebrated his 21st birthday, he was out with friends, embracing the freedoms of a young man his age.
The lively atmosphere took a sudden and tragic turn at approximately 1:35 a.m. Phoenix police, who were already in the area responding to a call about the loud party and possible gunshots, heard several shots ring out from the backyard as they attempted to contact the homeowner. The sounds of celebration were instantly replaced by chaos and panic as dozens of partygoers scattered, running for safety.
Once the immediate danger had passed, officers made their way into the backyard to a grim scene. Three people had been struck by gunfire. Xavier Paul Martinez and another 21-year-old, Robert Puentes, were found with fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. A third individual was also wounded but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
