In the late hours of a Saturday night in Phoenix, Arizona, a heated discussion outside a Walgreens pharmacy at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road took a fatal turn. On April 1, 2023, 26-year-old Isaiah Munoz, a Hispanic male, was involved in a dispute with a couple, Joseph Aguilar and his girlfriend. The couple reportedly went into the pharmacy to shop following the argument.
Shortly after, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire echoed through the area,
prompting multiple calls to the Phoenix Police Department. When officers arrived, they discovered Isaiah Munoz critically wounded. Paramedics from the Phoenix Fire Department worked to save him, rushing him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts and those of the medical staff, Munoz succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Homicide detectives began an investigation, and their attention soon focused on 36-year-old Joseph Aguilar. Following the investigation, Aguilar was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Isaiah Munoz. Aguilar admitted to shooting Munoz but claimed he did so in self-defense, stating that he was being attacked at the time. As the legal proceedings began, investigators continued to search for forensic evidence to either corroborate or dispute Aguilar's claim of self-defense.
